Maybe you’re still presenting as a man but you have that secret box of women’s underwear under your bed that you don’t tell anyone about. Maybe you’re taking your first tentative steps out of the closet. Maybe you’ve noticed that all of the lesbians you hang out with have strong opinions on bica vs. spiro. Maybe you’re a cis man who just really really really wants to know things about lesbian culture for some reason, like, you always felt disconnected from other men somehow, and you have this weird mixture of pedestalization and longing and self-hatred and shame.
It is commonly observed that trans people assigned female at birth have hobbies that are more popular among women, and trans people assigned male at birth have hobbies that are more popular among men. Trans women are, of course, equally valid women. But there’s no shame in getting a sense of validation and gender euphoria from doing the same things that cis people in your demographic do. And the nice thing about media consumption is that it’s open to absolutely everyone. Novels are not a woman-only space. No one is going to clock you as trans for watching a movie with lesbians in it.
Therefore, I am using my hard-won knowledge of lesbians, earned from years in the “hobbies more popular among women” trenches, to bring a media recommendation list to the trans lesbians of the world.
While I am trying to be helpful to trans lesbians, I hope this list may be helpful to anyone—cis or trans, female or male, queer or straight—who is interested in consuming some excellent stories about lesbians.
This list only applies to the Extremely Online lesbian demographic but, like, come on, you’re reading my substack, you haven’t touched grass in long enough that you’re not entirely certain whether it’s orange.
