A heap in the middle of the glade shifts. It is GÜNTHER, curled fetally on the forest floor. We see a close-up of his profile. He is ANDROGYNOUS with DELICATE FEATURES and FLOWING AUBURN HAIR. His CONSPICUOUSLY VIOLET-COLORED EYES are red around the edges, his breathing labored.

He pulls a hypodermic needle from his skin. The deed was done before we had the chance to stop it. As the DRUG takes effect, we flash through SCENES FROM HIS PAST: a small crude LEAN-TO, a HAND petting a DOG, a STUNNINGLY BRUISED NECK, a STORM, a purple-eyed BOY cowering in the cold.

In the present, GÜNTHER shudders. SWEAT beads on his skin. He stashes the used needle in a HARD-SHELLED PLASTIC CONTAINER so that INNOCENT FOREST CREATURES don’t harm themselves stepping on it - a care he refuses to show himself. GÜNTHER stumbles through the forest, his SURPRISINGLY CLEAN, BONY FIGURE caught in shaky glimpses.

LYRA

This is my cottage, where I live on the edge of the woods. When I’m not reading or studying for class, I collect wild plants and mushrooms.

GÜNTHER

What do you study?

LYRA

Everything. Right now I have enough credits for 14 different degrees but I haven’t graduated yet because the simple life of a student is enough for me.

GÜNTHER

GÜNTHER looks plaintively at LYRA. Even though his own troubles are much greater, his heart ACHES for her. Then he gasps with pain.

GÜNTHER

GÜNTHER catches LYRA’s arm as it hovers delicately above him. He is clearly FEVERISH.

He leans in as though to kiss her on the lips, his luminous purple eyes alight with conflict. Some vestige of sense in him deems this gesture too far, which is honestly crazy given where all this is headed. He ducks his head and starts kissing and sucking ferociously on her neck instead. He is not in this moment a VAMPYRE or any sort of DRACULA but the comparison can be drawn. LYRA gasps. He whispers in her ear, voice ragged.

(holding up the needle)

GÜNTHER

I may as well be dead.

LYRA

Why? Why would you do this to yourself?

GÜNTHER

LYRA

(actively undressing)

GÜNTHER

(one tear spilling down his cheek)

GÜNTHER finally comes with a yell of anguish. An ESOTERIC SEQUENCE OF IMAGES take us through this pivotal moment. Reused footage and special effects. None of this is AI SLOP. We have STANDARDS. First we see LIGHTNING STRIKE A CAIRN IN A FIELD. Then we see a RUSHING WATERFALL. A flock of WILD BIRDS all TAKES FLIGHT AT ONCE. A men’s choir wearing SILVER MASKS bursts into HARMONY. A drop of MOLTEN BISMUTH falls into water and congeals into an INTRICATE CRYSTAL. A SEA STAR (shown in fast-motion) devours a MUSSEL. A STORM RAGES, and in the middle we see GUNTHER, in the posture of himself from before as a child but now the sad and tear-stained face is that of the adult he has become. A FLAMING HAND reaches for him, strokes his face, and then A HUNDRED MORE surround him. Despite the flames sizzling away his teardrops into vapor, he is UNHARMED. The only sound we hear is a SOB that settles into silence.

LYRA

Günther? Günther?

GÜNTHER looks up at her with a feverish reverence. His PURPLE EYES GLEAM. He starts to sit up and reach for her but then collapses from DEHYDRATION.

GÜNTHER stirs in tight focus. His hand twitches. He is covered with a QUILT. Hands come in from off screen as we zoom out; we see LYRA, mopping sweat off his brow with a damp tea towel. He MUMBLES INDISTINCTLY. LYRA guides him to sit up and helps him drink from a mug of tea.

GÜNTHER

(His voice is gone. He speaks in a husky whisper from here out.)

Lyra…

LYRA

Do you feel better?

GÜNTHER suddenly remembers and looks horrified. His exhausted and terribly pretty face crumples slowly with waves of regret.

GÜNTHER

I’ve done something terrible.

LYRA

Uh!

GÜNTHER

The way I acted toward you… It’s unforgivable. I’m so sorry.

LYRA

You weren’t really in control, it’s, uh… No, it’s okay.

GÜNTHER

You don’t have to lie to me. I’ll leave.

LYRA

No, really, I’m glad you trusted me enough to let me help you.

GÜNTHER

I believe you. I have never known anyone like you. I’m honored to be in your presence, let alone…

He BLUSHES and WINCES again at the recent memory, an event he has CHALLENGING FEELINGS ABOUT which he will have to WORK THROUGH later. LYRA takes his high-boned cheek in one hand and kisses his worries away for the moment.

LYRA

You look tired. Maybe I am lonely. Please stay.

GÜNTHER

LYRA

By the way, you should know that I’m on a reliable form of birth control so we don’t need to worry about anything. I mean, I’d love to keep seeing you, but I don’t want to rush into anything.

A solid 5 SECONDS of silence as GÜNTHER, clearly thinking about this for the first time, blinks into space.
