"Our rule (in a Catholic context) is so sublime that it needs to be secret" is, let me be clear, an absolutely INSANE thing to say. In a "our bikeshed policy is more important than the Bible" kind of way.

I've seen claims that Scientology is the hardest cult to recover from. I'm not sure this is true, but it probably has more meddling with internal processes than most.

I've been paying attention to what I call emotional policing-- people telling each other what they're supposed to feel. For example, I've been seeing any number of people saying to not feel bad for Trump supporters whose lives were severely damaged by Trump. Aside from whether this is good strategy, are the emotions really anyone's business?
