I'm not Californian, but I am a teacher and I feel for you on the Christensen one - it feels to me like opinions on education have coalesced into two tribes, and for some reason phonics has ended up in the second one, despite good scientific evidence that it works precisely to further the aims of the first one - you know, reducing inequality by disproportionately helping the most disadvantaged?
Re measure U: by "did the last bond to find better roads actually fund better roads" are you referring to Measure KK? Cause it has one of the clearest government websites I've ever seen explaining the roads it's supposed to pave and their status. Or is there some idea here that these roads aren't better or something?
Huh, I've got a "Edits the city charter to be gender-neutral" measure on my ballot, too, in a different California city (well, it's "Ratifies the city council's changes to the charter", one of which was to make it gender neutral). Was there a campaign to get cities to amend their charters to be gender-neutral this year or something?

I feel like "openly campaigns on wanting to lie to children about history" is maybe worse than being opposed to one specific way of teaching reading?
Kids remember how to read, because it’s actually useful in your life. Knowledge of history isn’t, and so it’s swiftly disposed of.

Alameda goes almost all the way out to Tracy. Livermore has rural land! And in fact, Measure D is probably just specifically about Livermore.
