You could've had a free copy if you'd wanted, lol!

I'll try to add some brushing fingers in book 2, just for you.

Library finally got me the book. I devoured it. How long until the second book?

(Were you inspired at all by Torchship's analog spaceships?)

The next one comes out next summer, August I think. I'm really excited about it.

I didn't know about Torchship. I was just trying to combine two genres I like, but over time I've built a list of similar things. It's not really an original idea, but I think the only very famous example is Honor Harrington.

So what romance do you recommend?

In novels, my favorite bar none is Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: it really transcends the romance genre with characterization work as good as Bujold's and thoughtful exploration of the way power corrupts. The last book in the series is just painful to read. But I've also really been enjoying Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou's novels recently, which are a bit lighter and fluffier (not to mention hornier), typically with Lawful Good/Chaotic Evil pairings. In Western fiction, I really liked Xiran Jay Zhao's Iron Widow: canonical poly ship between two of the most feral violent traumatized mecha pilots imaginable and their morality pet/voice of reason.

There have been some fantastic TV shows coming out of Thailand. My absolute favorite is Manner of Death, which is a romantic suspense show. It has some wonky camera/sound stuff because Thai TV has zero budget, but the actors playing the main pairing have absolutely scintillating chemistry like I've never seen between another couple. Kinnporsche is the Thai TV show which is most popular overseas, although I would say it is more... niche... it's a twelve-episode experiment in how close you can get to pornography on Thai TV at 11pm.

...And it has occurred to me that you might have wanted lesbians. [laughing] I read a lot of books with lesbians but they're all too busy dealing with colonialism to get up to much fucking, I'm afraid.

Naah I'll take any good romance. But what's your best novel on colonialism. I enjoyed Jade City on this a bit though that's pretty standard fantasy.

Speaking of Regency Era in space, have you heard of Lieutenant Fusilier?

It's set in a world where sapient robots were invented shortly after the Napoleonic era, resulting in an era of abundance that can best be described as "fully automated luxury space British Empire." It's ridiculous but also a lot of fun.

(And it's a rare robot story where the robots aren't an analogy for slavery or racism - instead, it's used to replicate the class divisions of that era, with humans being aristocrats who own planet-sized estates, while the robots are the servants who actually keep galactic civilization running. Don't worry, they generally enjoy their work.)
