I have, for a long time, had an interest in romances. I’ve read English-language romance novels, Chinese-language romance novels (danmei), and fanfiction. I’ve watched Asian boys’ love dramas and American romantic comedies. I actually wrote my undergrad thesis on romance novels. Across these diverse genres, I have noticed some commonalities in the traits of romance heroes; these commonalities, therefore, could indicate what women in general tend to find attractive.
The romance hero has three essential traits. He should be cool, devoted, and sad.1
