This is great! Your review might actually cause me to donate to AWF; I share your concern about the efficacy of interventions there, so I'm glad you addressed it.

You inspired me to write a post of my own on the same subject: https://mechanisticmind.substack.com/p/where-i-donated-in-2024

As a pro-life person who's supporting AMF proportionately more than GiveWell recommends because of that, I'm very much looking forward to your post giving a cost-benefit analysis from that angle!

Thanks also for pointing out the difference between "GiveWell Unrestricted" and "GiveWell All Grants"; I'm also a fan of GiveWell continuing to pay people, but I hadn't considered that difference.

I'm always a little concerned when I see someone supercali-scrupulous giving away money. Makes me worry that you're doing it out of scrupulosity when that money should go to you!

Like with Scott (your ex? Household member?) donating a kidney - I really thought that was wrong

As it turns out, my scrupulosity has nothing to do with spending money on things I value, and quite a lot to do with "I should listen to the opinions of complete strangers about how I live my life, more than my own values and preferences." You may do with this fact as you will.

Well my opinion as a near-complete stranger (I think we've met two or three times IRL) is that you shouldn't listen to the first commenter

So now our comments cancel each other out

As an aside, I am a huge fan of your writing and quite a few pieces of yours have really spoken to me.

I can't tell how to interpret this - is it sarcasm? Are you making a point? I'm sorry but I don't understand what this means.

I believe the point is:

- Ozy has certain values (like people not dying of malaria, and animals not being tortured on factory farms). By donating to charity, they uphold those values.

- Ozy scrupulously listens to the opinions of strangers to a possibly unhealthy extent. Therefore they might put too much weight on your comment, *not* give to charity, and thus make the world a worse place according to their values/preferences.

So why didn't you give to GiveWell unrestricted?

That was explained: it was an error.

I didn't think that was explained at all
